Subscription upgrades

The Subscription upgrade feature allows brands to increase LTV and AOV by offering personalized upgrade paths that encourage customers to commit to larger packs or longer cadences. When a subscription is eligible for an upgrade, a promotional banner appears at the top of the subscription details page in the customer portal. This banner highlights the benefits of upgrading, such as better discounts or added perks.

What is subscription upgrade?

The Subscription upgrade feature gives customers the option to switch to a higher-value version of their current subscription. This could mean upgrading to a larger pack, choosing a longer delivery frequency, or both. For instance, a customer subscribed to a 1-month plan could be offered a 3-month plan with a better price and perks like free shipping.

This helps brands:

  • Improve customer retention by locking in longer commitments.
  • Increase revenue per subscriber by promoting high-value SKUs.
  • Deliver a more flexible and tailored subscription experience.

How it works for customers

When a subscription is eligible for an upgrade, a promotional banner appears at the top of the subscription details page in the customer portal. This banner highlights the benefits of upgrading, such as better discounts or added perks.

Customers can click the banner to view upgrade details in a dedicated drawer. This view compares their current subscription with the new option, including pricing and frequency changes. If multiple upgrade options are available, they’ll have the option to “See all upgrades” and browse the full list.

Even if the customer dismisses the banner, they can still access the upgrade offer later via a button on their subscription page. The upgrade flow is designed to be smooth, clear, and frictionless.

Setting up upgrades in the admin portal

Follow these steps to complete the process.

  1. To configure upgrades, navigate to Loop Admin > Grow > Upgrades.

  1. Click on the "Create new profile" button and configure the upgrade settings. With Loop, brands can do two types of upgrades on the subscription management customer portal:

  • SKU + Frequency Upgrade: for customers moving to a bigger pack and longer cadence
  • SKU Upgrade Only: for customers switching to a higher-value product at the same frequency

  1. Brands can add conditions based on subscriptions, products, customers, bundles and demographic properties to offer personalised upgrades to the existing subscriber base.

  1. Next steps would involve mapping the product for the upgrade, allowing customers to select the upgraded products. You can also set the priority in which the products will be displayed to the customer. If it is an SKU upgrade + frequency change, then select the cadence for the new and old frequency in "Subscription frequency" section.

  1. In the next step, configure the discount for the upgrade profile with flexibility to choose discounts based on the selling plan, fixed discount, and percentage.

  1. Configure the upgrade banner texts in the "Upgrade banner" section to show the personalised upgrade content to the customers on the customer portal. Upgrade drawer texts are also customisable based on the profile.

There is a section to add short description texts when multiple upgrade offers are available.

Understanding upgrade analytics

In the admin portal, brands can access the analytics and compare the numbers with previous date ranges seamlessly.

Upgrade analytics have a cumulative as well as a profile-level view for conversions and views.

Cumulative analytics for all profiles:

  • Total banner views: The number of times the upgrade banner was shown on the customer portal.
  • Total offer details views: The number of clicks done on the view details of the upgrade banner.
  • Conversions: Number of successful upgrades done on the customer portal.
  • Conversions rate: The percentage of conversion versus the upgrade profile views.

Upgrade profile analytics:

  • Profile: Internal name of the upgrade profile configured.
  • Status: Status of the upgrade profile.
  • Type: Type of the upgrade profile, SKU or SKU + frequency upgrade.
  • Banner views: The number of times the banner was shown on the customer portal.
  • Offer details views: View the details click count of the banner.
  • Conversion rate: The percentage of conversion versus the upgrade profile views.
  • Offer rejected: The number of times the offer was viewed and was not accepted.

Eligibility, limitations and best practices

To ensure a smooth upgrade experience, keep these points in mind:

  • For SKU upgrades & SKU + frequency upgrades, the offer is shown only if the subscription has a single subscribed product (one-time add-ons are fine).
  • The new product must be mapped to a valid selling plan and be in stock.
  • Prepaid, gift and in-dunning subscriptions are not currently supported.

Admins can also trigger upgrades manually from the subscription detail screen and track every change in the subscription activity logs, including before/after details for product, frequency, and price.
