Managing Shopify checkout translations

Merchants can manage and update the translations shown on the Shopify checkout page for subscription products, ensuring subscribers see the correct language and terminology. Properly configured translations help provide a seamless checkout experience, improve clarity for customers, and maintain consistency across different subscription products and selling plans.

Problem statement

When a subscription product is added to the checkout, price-related translations are automatically fetched based on the selling plan mapped to the product in Loop and displayed on the Shopify checkout. This can sometimes confuse merchants, as they may want different texts to match their brand tone or may prefer not to display these translations at all. The source of these translations is not always clear, making it difficult for merchants to update them. This article aims to reduce that friction by guiding merchants on how to easily change or remove these texts as needed.

How to handle these translations?

All these translations can be managed by going to Shopify dashboard > Online store > Live theme > Edit default theme content.

Note: If no text should be displayed, enter a blank space in the text box and click Save.

Product mapped to single-tier selling plan frequency

In this use case, the product is mapped to a selling plan frequency with a single-tier discount, applying a constant discount throughout the subscription. In this scenario, the two main texts shown below are fetched and displayed on the checkout screen.

→ Case 1: For example, the merchant wants to change the text saying "Recurring subtotal" to "Subscription recurring subtotal"

  1. Search for the keyword "recurring" in the search bar and locate the field named "Recurring subtotal label".

  1. Add the updated text and click on Save.

  1. The updated text will now be visible on the checkout page.

→ Case 2: For example, the merchant wants to change the text saying "$47.50 every month" to "$47.50 will be charged every month for subscription order"

  1. Search for the keyword "recurring" in the search bar and locate the field named "Recurring totals" by scrolling down the page.

  1. Add the updated text and click on Save.

  1. The updated text will now be visible on the checkout page.

Note: Make sure to add the updated text using standard variables (e.g., {{interval}}) so the correct value is passed dynamically at checkout. If static text is added, it will not update automatically.

Product mapped to multi-tier selling plan frequency

In this use case, the product is mapped to a selling plan frequency with a multi-tier discount, applying a constant discount throughout the subscription. In this scenario, the two main price texts are fetched and displayed on the checkout screen.

→ Case 1: Discount getting updated after initial payment

For example, the merchant wants to change the text saying "First payment $72.00, then $70.40 every 2 months" to "First checkout payment at $72.00, then $70.40 every 2 months on subscription order"

  1. Search for the keyword "policies" in the search bar and locate the field named "One" under "Checkout subscriptions recurring totals with policies first cycles" section.

  1. Add the updated text and click on Save.

  1. Under the section "Checkout subscriptions recurring totals with policies", locate the "Following cycles" field and add the updated text here.

  1. The updated text will now be visible on the checkout page.

→ Case 2: Discount getting updated after 4th or more payments

For example, the merchant wants to change the text saying "First 4 payments $72.00 each, then $70.40 every 2 months" to "First 4 payments $72.00, then $70.40 every 2 months on subscription order"

  1. Search for the keyword "policies" in the search bar and locate the field named "Other" under "Checkout subscriptions recurring totals with policies first cycles" section.

  1. Add the updated text and click on Save.

  1. Under the section "Checkout subscriptions recurring totals with policies", locate the "Following cycles" field and add the updated text here.

  1. The updated text will now be visible on the checkout page.

Note: Make sure to add the updated text using standard variables (e.g., {{interval}}) so the correct value is passed dynamically at checkout. If static text is added, it will not update automatically.
