Trial subscription

Trial subscriptions enable customers to test a product or service for a specified period at no cost. They are not charged during this time, giving them a risk-free way to experience the offering before committing. Once the trial period ends, the subscription automatically converts into a paid plan, and the customer is charged based on the regular billing cycle you’ve defined, such as 7 days, 15 days or monthly.

Examples of trial subscriptions include

Skincare: 7-day free trial of a daily moisturiser before starting a monthly plan
Fitness app: 14-day free access to premium workouts before billing begins
Tea brand: First box free, then charged monthly for curated tea blends
Supplements: One-week trial pack before converting to a recurring order

Loop subscription allows you to set up trial subscriptions on your store with ease. There are two methods for doing this using Loop.

Using Dynamic Discounts
Using Loop Flows

Setting up trial subscriptions using dynamic discounts

Using the discounts feature in Loop, you can configure your selling plan to offer the first cycle at a reduced rate for customers, after which the pricing automatically returns to the regular or original rate.

Follow these steps to complete the process

Navigate to Loop > Acquire > Selling plans > Create selling plan.

Here, we’ve configured the selling plan to give a 100% discount. After this, make sure the Change discount after a specific number of payments option is enabled.

In this case, after the initial order, we have chosen to have no discount on the product, thereby offering the product at full price. Essentially, this creates a trial subscription for a period of 30 days using custom discounting. You can change these values to your liking to offer the type of trial you’d want to provide for your users.

Setting up trial subscriptions using loop flows

To create a more dynamic trial subscription experience, you can use Loop Flows. There are different ways to offer a free trial product and then convert it into a subscription using flows. In this section, we’ll walk through one example using a multivitamin free trial, where the trial product is automatically swapped with the full-size subscription product after the trial ends and billing starts.

Problem statement

A merchant wants to offer a 7-day free trial of a multivitamin pack to new users. After the trial period ends, the subscription should automatically convert to a monthly billing cycle at the price defined by the merchant in the subscription details or contract.

Prerequisites

Before setting up the flow, we need to make sure these things are in place

Create a trial product: Duplicate your original product and set its price to $0. This will act as the trial version offered in the first cycle.
Set up two selling plans: One plan will be mapped to the trial product with the frequency set to 7 days and no discount applied at the plan level. The other plan will be linked to the full-size product, with the frequency set to 1 month and a desired discount applied, for example, $15 fixed price off.

Configuring loop flow

Follow these steps to complete the process

Navigate to Loop > Retain > Flows > Create flow button.

Enter the name of the flow and set the "When" condition (trigger event), choose from either option based on your requirement. We are using option "A new subscription is created" for this example.

Click here to learn more about "Where" conditions.

Now, under the IF condition, click on + Add conditions, choose Products in subscription (any of) from the Product-based section, and then select the trial product that needs to be swapped.

Click here to learn more about "IF" conditions.

Note: You can select more than one condition based on your specific use case.

Under the Then condition, add two actions: first, Swap product to replace the trial product with the original one, and second, Change subscription plan to switch to the plan linked with the original product.

Save the flow & set the status to Active to activate the flow.

Note: Flows are available as part of the Enterprise plan.

End results

We set the trial product frequency to 7 days to serve as the trial period. Once the trial product is purchased, the flow condition is triggered — the product is swapped post purchase, the selling plan is changed, the first billing date is set to 7 days from purchase, and the delivery frequency for subsequent orders is updated to one month per new plan.
