Selling plans

A selling plan allows brands to offer products on a subscription basis by defining billing and delivery frequencies, such as weekly, monthly, or yearly. These plans help structure how and when customers are charged and how often they receive the product.

In Loop, selling plans are created and managed through the selling plans section of the app. Each plan can be configured with various settings like frequency, discounts, anchor days, and more, giving merchants flexibility to tailor subscription experiences.

Note: If you are using a third-party app while exploring Loop Subscriptions, it’s possible that their widget may display Loop’s selling plans. This can lead to confusion or unexpected behavior on the storefront.

Understanding selling plans in Loop

Selling plans are the foundation of any subscription program. They allow you to define key elements such as how often customers are billed, how frequently products are delivered, and what discounts are offered to encourage subscriptions.

Key features of subscription selling plans

  • Delivery frequency: Define how often products will be delivered to the customer.
  • Billing frequency: Set how often the customer will be billed for their subscription.
  • Discounts: Add customer incentives by applying discounts to the selling plan.
  • Min & Max billing cycles: Set the minimum and maximum number of billing cycles a subscription should follow.
  • Specific day billing: Enable billing on specific days to offer more flexibility in the subscription model.

You can configure different types of subscriptions using selling plans. Below are the available options and their details.

What can you set up using Selling Plans

Description

Standard Subscription

Offer regular subscription plans with set delivery and billing frequencies.

Prepaid Subscription

Provide customers with the option to pay for their subscription in advance.

Gift Subscription

Enable customers to purchase subscriptions as gifts for others.

Build a bundle

Let customers create personalized subscription bundles by selecting their preferred items.

Trial Subscription

Offer trial periods for subscriptions to attract new customers.

Membership Subscription

Create subscription plans tied to membership benefits and exclusive access.

As illustrated in the image below, selling plan groups appear as alternative purchase options alongside the standard One-Time Purchase. A single product can be mapped to multiple selling plan groups, allowing customers to choose from various subscription options.

Note: To enable this, you need to map the same product to two or more different selling plans.

Setting up a selling plan in Loop

Selling plans come with several key configurations that help build a powerful subscription program. Depending on the subscription model you're aiming to implement, the selling plan setup will vary accordingly.

In the following sections, we’ll discuss how to configure various parts and settings of the selling plan and how to effectively use them.

Warning: Deleting or modifying a selling plan may impact active subscriptions associated with it. This can lead to issues with actions such as product swaps, upsells, and more. If any changes are necessary, please contact support@loopwork.co to understand the potential impact and ensure changes are made safely.

Create a new selling plan

Follow these steps to complete the process.

  1. Navigate to Loop > Acquire > Selling plans > Click on create selling plan.

  1. In this section, you can define the name of the selling plan that will be visible to customers on the store’s UI when they view subscription options for a product. This section includes four fields.

  • Name: The selling plan name that will be displayed to customers on the product page.
  • Internal name: It's the same as the "Name" field but for internal purposes only, customers won't see this.
  • Plan selector title: It's a message that will be displayed on the product page before the selling plan selector, like - Frequency, choose the delivery options, etc.
  • Priority: There might be more than one selling plan assigned to a particular product, so priority sets the order of the selling plan on the product page.

Set order schedule

This setting defines how frequently the customer will receive the product. You can set the delivery frequency in terms of days, weeks, or months. For example, selecting '1 month' means the product will be delivered once every month.

You can also define multiple delivery frequency options within the same selling plan to provide customers with more flexibility. To add multiple frequencies to a single selling plan, click on the Add frequency button.

Note: In case of multiple frequencies, if you want a particular frequency to be selected by default, enable the setting "Set as the default option selected on product widget and bundle builder page."

Setting up discounts

Discounts are a powerful way to convert one-time customers into long-term subscribers. Loop allows you to configure three types of discounts within a selling plan, giving you flexibility to tailor offers based on your subscription strategy:

  • Fixed amount: A fixed amount off the original price (e.g., $10 off).
  • Percentage: A set percentage off the original price (e.g., 10% off).
  • Set price: Offer the product at a fixed subscription price regardless of its original price (e.g., always $20).

You can also offer tiered-level discounts - for example, increasing the initial discount from 10% to 12% after the 4th payment, as a reward for loyal subscribers.

Setting up anchor day billing

Anchor day billing allows you to charge all subscribers on a specific day, whether it’s a particular day of the week, month, or even a fixed date every year, regardless of when the subscription started.

You need to enable the option “Do you charge on a specific day of the week/month?” and enter the desired values to apply this setting to a particular selling plan frequency.

Setting up advanced options

In this section, you can configure the following settings.

  • Min and max billing cycle: Define a minimum number of billing cycles before which a customer cannot cancel a subscription. Similarly, set a maximum number of billing cycles to automatically stop the subscription after a certain period. These settings help prevent misuse of subscription discounts and are useful for gifting subscription boxes.
  • Selling plan description: Use this field to write promotional content highlighting subscription benefits, discounts, cancellation policies, and more. The text must be entered in HTML format to be displayed correctly on the storefront.

Availability of the selling plan

The channel section allows you to control the availability of a selling plan across the following touchpoints.

  • Storefront product pages: Controls whether the selling plan is visible to customers during the subscription purchase flow on your online store.
  • Customer portal: Makes the selling plan available for customers to use in actions like upsell, swap product, or change subscription frequency.
  • Admin portal: Determines if the selling plan can be accessed while creating a subscription or editing it from the admin panel.
  • Checkout: Controls the availability of the selling plan during the checkout process. To use this, you must add the subscription upsell app block in the Shopify checkout editor.

Another advanced setting on this screen allows you to define the availability of the selling plan for specific countries, based on brand requirements. This is useful when a subscription is only meant to be offered in select regions due to shipping constraints, legal compliance, or localized pricing strategies.

Note: These advanced country-based availability rules do not apply to checkout or bundle.

FAQs

Can we remove the one-time purchase as a selling option in the store?

You can remove the one-time purchase option and sell only as a subscription by enabling the settings from Shopify > Products > Purchase options. Please check this quick video tutorial for the same - sell only as a subscription.

Can we configure multiple delivery/billing frequencies for a subscription product?

Yes, you will have to configure the required delivery/billing frequencies in the selling plan to which that particular product is mapped. Go to Loop > Acquire > Selling plans > Create / Edit selling plan > Add frequency.

Can I offer more than one selling plan on a particular product?

Yes, you can do that by creating multiple selling plans in the Loop app and adding that particular product to them. Navigate to Loop > Acquire > Selling plans > Create / Edit selling plan > Add / Edit products.

How can I change the texts (Subscribe and Save) and description/details displayed on the widget at the product page (PDP) storefront?

The texts and details displayed on the widget can be updated by navigating to Loop Admin portal > Acquire > Selling plans > (open the specific selling plan). For widget purchase option titles, update the 'Name' field. For the description on the widget, Navigate to Advanced options > Selling plan description (HTML enabled).

How was a Subscription created even when a selling plan not available on storefront?

There could be a chance that the subscription got created by 'Shop sales channel'. Please verify: Loop admin > Subscriptions > Specific subscription detail page > Open order# and check on the top if it shows 'Shop'. This feature was enabled automatically by Shopify resulting in subscription creation via Shop channel.

Recommended action for brands: Turn OFF the Subscriptions setting if they do not wish to sell subscriptions via Shop by visiting Shopify Admin > Sales Channels > Shop > Settings > Subscriptions

Impact:

When the Subscriptions setting is OFF, buyers will still see the subscription product on Shop but will be redirected to the brand’s online store to complete the subscription purchase.
